In the 1970s many a young director got his bones by getting Pam Grier to don a skimpy wife beater and some panties, prance around all sweaty, and occasionally get into a brawl with some dykes at your standard issue women’s prison. Journeyman exploitioneer Jack Hill got in on the craze with The Big Doll House. Pam Grier goes to jail for killing her husband, meets all kinds of degenerate women, and breaks out in a hail of boobs and bullets. Come for the tits, stay for the violence.

A simultaneous celebration of the women in prison idiom, as well as a lampoon on it, Reform School Girls with the incomparable Wendy O. Williams will rock your socks, provided that you are wearing any. Lots of group shower scenes and cat fights, as well as corrupt prison establishment. But more to the point, Wendy O. Williams walking around half naked being a total bitch for an hour and a half. What more do you really need to know other than that? Deacon Blues doesn’t really think much other knowledge is necessary.

It’s hard not to question the judgment of all parties who allowed 14 year old Linda Blair to star in the television movie Born Innocent. A touching morality tale about a teen runaway whose parents abandon her to The System. After getting raped with a broom handle by a gang of adolescent lesbian thugs, she runs away, and becomes as rancorous and riotous as the rest of the ladies. Again, not sure why her agent or her parents let her be in this one, but it doesn’t really matter. You just need to buy it. One of those “has to be seen to be believed” kinds of things.

A fun and sexy women in prison / blaxploitation romp featuring Pam Grier and some significantly less attractive white chick. Black Mama, White Mama is a loose remake of The Defiant Ones, the story of a Black inmate and a white inmate, chained together and forced to cooperate against various complications in their plan to escape. Black Mama is a hooker and White Mama is a pompous countercultural revolutionary, but really this is more about Pam Grier being Pam Grier and occassionally getting her tits out. Lots of great dialogue from both parties. One highlight? “Some jive-ass revolution don’t mean shit to me!” Preach on, sister! For fans of women in prison, blaxploitation, and the genre unto herself that is Pam Grier.

Another Linda Blair epic. Chained Heat evokes the New World Pictures women in prison movies, while failing to live up to their level of technical expertise or fun. Linda plays the new fish at a women’s prison, learning the ropes, and finally leading a rebellion. The plot is mostly incidental to scenes of lesbian rape, prison fights, and men abusing women. Not without it’s moments but not nearly as good as one of the classics from the 70s. If you’re a Linda Blair fanboy it’s an extra special treat, but those less enamored of the pea soup spitting, cocaine snorting starlette can skip this one.
