tIf you missed this month’s installment of Portland’s Grindhouse Film Fest series you didn’t just miss another month og kung fu fighting, dismembered bodies, and tales of bloody revenge. You missed the boys from the Alamo Drafthouse taking on local hero Dan Halstead in a battle of the trailers. If you weren’t there, fear not, Deacon Blues will be adding just as many as he can get his hot little hands on. When they’ve all been posted, I will show you the scores I gave each for their efforts. Without any further ado, I bring you, Trailer Wars, continuing all this weak and starting with Team Grindhouse Portland!

Big Trouble in Little China is one of those movies that’s just as good when you’re 25 as it is when you’re 8. A centuries old battle between factions of warring Chinese magicians erupts onto the streets of San Francisco, as a Chinese immortal searches for a Chinese girl with green eyes. Kurt Russell does his best John Wayne, Dennis Dun shows himself as one of the best Asian-American character actors out there. It’s a great piece of Americana, and the last major studio film directed by John Carpenter. All aboard the Pork Chop Express!

To describe the plot- a Shaolin student seeks revenge against the evil Qing overlords who killed his master- is to do a great disservice to Hand of Death. Ok, Mr. Jaded Kung Fu Movie Fan… would you get excited if I told you this was an early Jackie Chan feature? No? What if I told you that it was directed by none other than John Woo? Hand of Death stands head and shoulders aboev the wuxia pack with better dialogue and better acting… though the sets sometimes leave a bit to be desired. Highly recommended for all fans of stylized violence, be it with fists and feet or dual wield handguns.
