In the 1970s many a young director got his bones by getting Pam Grier to don a skimpy wife beater and some panties, prance around all sweaty, and occasionally get into a brawl with some dykes at your standard issue women’s prison. Journeyman exploitioneer Jack Hill got in on the craze with The Big Doll House. Pam Grier goes to jail for killing her husband, meets all kinds of degenerate women, and breaks out in a hail of boobs and bullets. Come for the tits, stay for the violence.

I don’t know why I waited so long to see this for the first time, but so be it. Switchblade Sisters is a masterpiece of bad girl cinema, starring the lovely Robbie Lee. The quintessential bad girl film, this movie has cat fights, foul language, an eye-patched lieutenant, and a girls’ jailhouse riot. Watch as a new girl enters the picture and sends the world of debs into a tailspin. The ending is a heavy dollop of moralizing and not-so-subtle commentary on loyalty. If you’ve been waiting on seeing this for any reason, stop whatever youre doing right now, go down to the local video rental place and pick yourself up a copy. You’ll be glad that you did.

Pam Grier vehicle Coffy is basically a step-by-step first run on Foxy Brown. It’s hard to say which is better, but both are definitely worth checking out. In Coffy Pam Grier is out for revenge- for her heroin-addicted sister, for her childhood friend beaten nearly to death by mafia thugs, and for herself, set up by Black politicians and the mob. A great throwback to the 70s days of Soul Power, big Afros, earnest talk about drugs in the community, and sticking it to the man. Watch for Pam Grier’s boobs which are apparently oddly asymmetrical. Run a double feature with Foxy Brown and see which one you prefer.

Pam Grier, the “Queen of the Genre,” returns in Foxy Brown, a non-sequel to Coffy. Bordering on a revenge picture, Foxy Brown sets her sights on revenge after the mob kills her lover and brother. Not content to merely gun down everyone that done her wrong, Foxy finds gruesome, unsubtle means of settling the score. Pam Grier is at her foxiest, rocking some great outfits and a big ‘fro. Lots of talk about the Man keeping you down, but Foxy’s behavior shows that the Man can’t keep a good woman down. Some stilted dialogue doesn’t keep this from being a fun, entertaining film. But there isn’t nearly as much Pam Grier boobage as you might expect / want.
