The question on the minds of every Grindhouseland reader is this: Is the 1976 gore film Bloodsucking Freaks the masterpiece that Lil Deacon Blues thought that it was? The answer is a resounding hell to the yes.

First, a quick story. Lil Deacon Blues finally decided to take this movie home as the um… “entertainment” for his Halloween vegan potluck which also included the debut of his new Misfits boxed set. So began a several years long love affair with the film Bloodsucking Freaks. Several years later, the first time I met Lloyd Kaufman he asked what my favorite Troma film was and I responded, without a pause, “Bloodsucking Freaks.” He somewhat curtly informed me that Troma had nothing to do with Bloodsucking Freaks and that if he had it to do all over again, he would never have distributed it in the first place.

A man and his midget deal in both white slavery and high art. By day they buy and sell women to such luminaries as an oil sheik played by the Key Grip’s fourth cousin Morty. By night they torture the women to death on stage in a grand guignol style show. In their spare time they come up with such charming turns of phrase as “her mouth will make an interesting urinal.”

This movie is great fun, from the bright red blood to the totally over the top torture violence that goes from grotesquely disturbing to sublimely baroque by the second half hour. The film overplays the gore card so hard that you’re bored with fake blood by the middle of the movie and just going “OH DAMN!” by the time the dentists starts blowing bubbles trough a hole he just drilled in a woman’s skull. SPOILER ALERT: The last shot of the film is a bunch of starving women eating dick sandwiches. Yeah, kids, it’s that kind of movie. This is the Citizen Kane of bad movies. More gripping than Plan 9 From Outer Space and far more fun for its foibles than Manos: The Hands of Fate. Still a great way to gross out your friends.

I Drink Your Blood

Fun but kind of dumb gore / shock movie about a Mansonesque cult leader (was there any other kind in 1970?), I Drink Your Blood definitely gets points for gore. Also, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen another movie where a twelve year old boy seeks revenge against the hippie cult that gave his grandfather bad acid by injecting rabies blood into meatpies. Just sayin’. What follows is the required frothing at the mouth, zombified hippies doing anything they can to sink their teeth into human flesh. For a shock movie, it kind of tends to pull its punches, a little, though, making the final result a little less than shocking. Generally shown on a double bill with I Eat Your Skin.

A prisoner is released from a year in the joint and sets out to make his fortunte at gonzo snuff porn in Last House on Dead End Street. Die hard fans of the obvious influence (at least in terms of marketing and broader strokes and genre tropes) Last House on the Left will likely dig the occasional bouts of intensity, but fans of shocksploitation probably won’t be wowed by what is essentially a third rate effort. It’s got low lighting, shitty film, and the camera work of someone’s nightmare. Rumor has it that the film had a total budget of a cool three grand, all but eight hunny of which the director spent on speed. Classy. Not terrible for a group, but ultimately not very satisfying as anything other than pure schlock.

Color Me Blood Red

The final film in H.G. Lewis’s “Blood” trilogy, Color Me Blood Red is a darker, grittier, gorier remake of Corman’s A Bucket of Blood. In this reworking, the artist is a painter who just can’t get the right shade of red… until he mixes it with blood. One of Lewis’s masterpieces, the direction here is markedly above some of his other works. There’s oodles of gore and buckets of bright red movie blood to make this nasty remake a whole lot of fun. The artist in this film is perhaps one of the best actors I’ve ever seen in a Lewis picture. Definitely worth checking out for fans of gore, H.G. Lewis, or A Bucket of Blood, but not for people easily disturbed by massive amounts of paint-colored red blood.

Something Weird DVD is noticeably light on special features for a company known for packing their disks full of goodies.
